It is a multidisciplinary research unit focused on Mediterranean mountain issues, belonging to the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança and with a pole at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (Portugal). CIMO is part of a national research network coordinated by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). The center has an interdisciplinary approach based on an applied research strategy ranging from questions and knowledge from nature (raw materials, natural resources and agriculture and forest management) to final products (food or biomaterials). It also seeks to promote research in Mediterranean mountain areas according to international best practices, promoting scientific observation and experimental development for the conservation, exploration and scientific valorization of biodiversity, natural resources, natural products and agriculture and forestry systems; developing sustainable land use systems, improving endogenous research competences and linking this research to stakeholders, promoting sustainable development in mountain areas.
This center is socially committed to increase opportunities and incomes in the mountain areas of study. For all this, the center is organized in two main groups: Socio-ecological Systems and Sustainable Products and Processes.
