MONTCLIMA

Mountains are highly vulnerable to natural risks, which are becoming more intense due to climate change. The risk comes from the encounter between a natural phenomenon and the infrastructures and services that occupy the territory. Natural phenomena cause environmental damage, but also social and economic losses. Southwest Europe is one of the areas of the world suffering most from the effects of climate change. Its mountain areas are threatened by four main risks: drought, forest fires, erosion and flooding.

NOTÍCIAS

Around 120 people participated in the 3rd MONTCLIMA seminar on management strategies for the prevention of drought impacts on mountain forests in the SUDOE. The seminar, which took place on 30 September in the emblematic building of the "Institut d'Estudis Catalans", was another opportunity to transfer MONTCLIMA's pilot experiences and lessons learned, as well as to share some of the leading practices and initiatives in the management and prevention of drought risks in the forests of the SUDOE region.

What is the link between natural hazards and climate change?

Over the past two decades, the scientific community has focused efforts on clarifying the links between extreme weather events and global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. While extreme weather events may be due to natural causes, there is a broad scientific consensus that human-induced climate change is making these events more likely and more intense.
