MONTCLIMA

Mountains are highly vulnerable to natural risks, which are becoming more intense due to climate change. The risk comes from the encounter between a natural phenomenon and the infrastructures and services that occupy the territory. Natural phenomena cause environmental damage, but also social and economic losses. Southwest Europe is one of the areas of the world suffering most from the effects of climate change. Its mountain areas are threatened by four main risks: drought, forest fires, erosion and flooding.

NOTÍCIAS

One of the key actions of the SUDOE MONTCLIMA project is the design and implementation (testing and development) of common Action Plans for prevention and management of natural hazards, which will be validated and/or improved through pilot trials.

The Valentin valley, located mainly in the Eaux-Bonnes area, is a zone regularly subjected to all kinds of natural hazards such as usually occurs in the mountains.

The first step of this pilot case of the MONTCLIMA project was the carrying out of a multi-hazard inventory made from avalanche reports, newspaper articles, archives and records, RTM/MTES event database and evidences or witness statements.

680 events have been registered over the last two centuries, among which 604 avalanches, 33 landslides and mudflows, 33 torrential events and 11 rockfalls.

Coinciding with World Earth Day, the second transnational seminar on "Forest fire management and prevention strategies in the SUDOE area" took place on 22 April 2021 in Leira, Portugal. The meeting was hosted by the Intermunicipal Community of the Leira Region (CIMRL), a partner of the project. From 9:30 to 14:00, numerous external speakers and MONTCLIMA partners shared the latest data collected on forest fires, and exchanged on best management practices to increase the resilience of the territories of the Southwest against the risk of forest fires.
